About Me

My name is 张文泽 (Wenze Zhang) and I go by Sylvester. I publish under Sylvester W. Zhang. I am currently a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCLA.

Previously, I received my Ph.D in 2025 from Univ. of Minnesota, where I studied algebraic combinatorics under Pasha Pylyavskyy.

Research

My research is in the area of algebraic combinatorics, often among the intersection of total positivity, geometry of the flag variety, and representation theory of linear groups. Specifically, I am interested in

Outreach

REU

I have been involved in undergraduate mentoring across several programs. Below is a list of papers that resulted from undergraduate projects I mentored, some of which I co-authored. If you are an undergrad student at UCLA and want to discuss research opportunites, feel free to reach out.

Below are some REU programs that I’ve been involved with.

PACE

I have been a mentor at PACE (PKU Algebraic Combinatorics Experience), and REU program at Peking University. There I mentored the following projects:

[To be added.]

Twin Cities REU

I was a graduate TA in the in the UMN Algebra and Combinatorics REU (see this newsletter) 2021 and 2022, where I helped with three projects:

As an undergrad, I was fortunate to participate in the Twin Cities REU in 2019, where I worked on projects in covering graphs with Sunita Chepuri, lattice models with Ben Brubaker, and dynamical combinatorics with Sam Hopkins.

Organizing

I've co-organized MRWAC (Minnesota Research Workshop in Algebraic Combiantorics), a summer research workshop aimed to foster collboration among the grad students, faculty, postdoc, and (generalized) alumni of the UMN algebra and combinatorics group. See the webpage of the workshop.
